NEW CARLISLE - The Arndt family dynasty continued in the Friday Night Home Run Derby, as Nick Arndt beat out his dad, John, by a score of 12-11 in the finals for the 2014 title at Migley Field.
Nick hit his Golden bat clinching home run with two outs to spare in the final round. It was his 49th home run of the night, the most of any competitor. Nick exploded for 23 long balls in the second round alone, earning him the top seed for the two-man finals. John finished with 42 total homers on the day.
It was the eighth title between the two Arndts in the ten-year history of the event. This year's championship was Nick's fourth, previously winning three straight from 2010-12. Nick did not participate in the 2013 event, which was won by the elder Arndt. John also took home titles in 2005, 2008, and 2009.
Three-time City Champion and frequent Derby finalist Garrett Curless finished third out of the field of 15, with 27 total dingers in two rounds. His New Carlisle Newts teammate Noah Shail was fourth with 20 home runs of his own.
